Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Sleep Among Children and Adolescents : Towards an Integrative Approach to Health Promotion
Lee Eun-Young

Yi Kyoung-June
Abstract
An integrative approach towards health promotion, first introduced by Chaput and colleagues(2014), views a day as finite that is limited to 24 hours. According to the integrative approach, movement behaviours including different intensities of physical activity(PA), sedentary behaviour(SB), and sleep occur within a 24-hour period and co-independently affect health. This approach is particularly important in understanding the health and well-being of Korean children and adolescents, given the cultural/social contexts of Korea. Due to the country¡¯s competitive education system, Korean children and adolescents suffer from lack of sleep, physical inactivity, and extended time spent in education. The current health outcomes of Korean children adolescents warrant the development of¡°24-hour movement behaviour guidelines.¡±The current study reviews the paper by Chaput and colleagues(2014) and provides suggestions for future research in the Korean context. Furthermore, a theoretical framework intended to guide future work is also presented. To develop locally-sensitive 24-hour movement behaviour guidelines for Korean children and adolescents, the following research areas are of importance: 1) an examination of sleep quantity and quality and their associations with health, academic achievement and health; 2) an in-depth understanding of the associations between light-intensity physical activity, health and well-being; 3) measurement and evaluation of movement behaviours using objective measures; 4) an integrative understanding of 24- hour movement behaviours using compositional analysis; and 5) efforts to promote a shift from ¡°sitting culture¡± to ¡°active culture¡±in institutional/educational settings. Central to the discussion of each is the need for an integrative approach recognizing the co-independence and interactions of movement behaviours within a 24-hour period as a potential health determinant.
